My name is Danijela Jade-Alice Bastaic. I am Serbian, Japanese, and Polish. So, I grew up in a very culturally mixed household. I lived in a small town called Highland, IN (on the border of Highland and Hammond). The small-town life had its ups and downs. Our town wasn't very diverse, but they were relatively inclusive. I also got to meet almost everyone in town because of how close-knit the community was. However, that also meant that everyone knew each other so gossip was strong where I am from. It was very annoying but that is just how it was. On the other hand, I made a lot of lifelong friends here and some really great memories. For the town being small, the impact was big. And I have the pleasure of keeping all of the memories and experiences with me forever.
I was also very involved in my hometown. I was a part of many sports and clubs throughout my school years. These experiences taught me a lot about myself and life in general. I also was able to meet a lot of people from different schools and gain many connections in my community. All of these opportunities were very rewarding and made me the person I am today.
I was a manager for four years. I became the Head manager officially my Senior year. I made sure everything ran smoothly for everyone. So, this was a stressful job, but I loved every second of it.
I was the Head Manager for three years. I made sure all of the managers were doing what they were supposed to. I woke up early morning and was out until the night at meets. I was a lot of work but it was worth it.
I was the Highschool Athletic Trainer's Aid for three years. I learned basic first aid and even some more advanced techniques. I would go to all of the sporting events (most by myself) to be on standby if someone was injured or needed help.
I played tennis for four years. I was mostly a doubles player which helped me work on teamwork and trusting my teammates. I was able to better myself as an athlete by attending daily practices and competing at weekly matches.
I was in choir for seven years. I mostly sang as an alto and sometimes as a mezzo-soprano. It was a fulfilling experience to be able to perform at concerts. We even competed at ISSMA which was a singing competition.
I was a part of many clubs and societies. My main club was the student council for 10 years. I was also a member of the Japanese National Honors Society and the National Honors Society.
