For my Spring 2023 semester, I decided to do an honors contract with my Professor, Gina Londino-Smolar. It was for my Concepts of Forensic Science II class. I decided to pick this class to do an honors contract with because my major is Forensic Biology.
I wrote a 10-page, double-spaced research paper about Forensic Botany. I wrote about the beginning of forensic science and forensic botany. I then explained the schooling and career paths behind the field. The paper also discusses case studies and methods used in the field. The paper then concluded with newer studies in the field and talked about the importance of improving the field and how necessary it is to make it more accepted/known.
This was an exciting project to do. I was able to learn more about my major which I am very passionate about. I also learned about a field in my major that I didn't know much about. This project allowed me to better some transferrable skills such as communication (with my professor) and being more accountable, by getting a project done that I was assigned by myself.
I made two sculptures out of clay to demonstrate the difference between plant and animal cells. I decided to talk specifically about animal skin cells and the cross-section of a leaf which is the plant's "skin" cells.
I then created a Google Slide Show to help showcase the structure of each cell and then compare/contrast them. I think this can be a great tool to help teach people or even a good review tool to remember specific structures.
I also made this with High Schoolers in mind because one of my jobs back home is being a substitute teacher so I made sure this wasn't too complicated but still had the necessary information.
