The Sacrifice of Our Forefathers (Testimonial)

한국의 서울 한 쪽 끝에 양화진이라는 곳이 있다. 그 곳은 한국에 와서, 한국을 위해 살다가, 한국을 위해 죽은 선교사들의 무덤이 있는 곳이다. 2005년 처음 그 곳을 방문했고, 올 해 다시 그 곳에 갔다. 낯선 이름들, 그리고 익숙한 이름들의 선교사들 무덤앞에서, 내가 어떻게 웨일즈로 갔고, 중국에 갔으며, 지금 다시 웨일즈에서 살고 있는지를 생각했다.  우리 조상들이 걸어간 길을 지금 우리가 가고 있고, 그리고 이 걸음을 또 걸어갈 세로운 세대를 위해 기도했다. 한국 교회의 선교의 대가 끊어지고 있는 지금...  나는 새로운 세대를 키워낼 수 있을까? 이제 나도 나이가 50이 가까와 지는데...  대답은 YES 였다. 지금도 그런 젊은이들이 나오고 있고, 앞으로도 나올 것이다. 우리에게 많은 아들이 필요없다. 아브라함에게 이삭이라는 한 명의 아들이 대를 이었던 것처럼, 너에게도 그 한 명의 아들로 충분하다. 무거운 마음과 어깨로 그 곳에 갔다가, 가벼운 마음과 어깨로 돌아왔다. 그렇다고 나의 비전이, 꿈이 가벼워 진 것은 아니다. 나는, 우리는 가야할 길이 있다. 꿔야 할 꿈이 있다. 바라보아야 할 비전이 있다. 이제부터 시작이다. 

In one corner of Seoul, South Korea, there is a place called Yanghwajin. It is a location where missionary workers who came to Korea, lived for Korea, and died for Korea are laid to rest. I first visited this place in 2005 and returned there this year. Standing in front of the graves with unfamiliar and familiar names of these missionaries, I pondered how I had gone to Wales, then to China, and now find myself living in Wales again. We are walking the path our ancestors trod, and for the new generation who will walk this path once more, I offered my prayers.

In a time when the legacy of missionary work in the Korean church seems to be fading away, I asked myself if I could raise up a new generation. I'm nearing the age of 50 myself. The answer was YES. Even now, young individuals are emerging, and they will continue to do so. We don't need many sons. Just like Isaac was enough as the one son who carried on Abraham's lineage, you too are enough as that one son. I went to that place with a heavy heart and shoulders but returned with a lighter spirit and shoulders. However, this doesn't mean my vision and dream have become light. We have a path to walk, dreams to dream, and a vision to pursue. It all begins now.
