Our volunteers set out on an exciting mushroom hunting expedition inspired by the latest edition of Plantlife's magazine. We were thrilled to discover the Yellow Stagshorn!
During our adventure, we encountered some intriguing finds that we couldn’t identify, so we reached out to a friend at Newport City Council. Thanks to their connections at Coal Spoil Fungi, we confirmed our find: the wonderfully named Orange Ping-Pong Bat (Favolaschia claudopus). The species is a non-native and should not be moved to avoid spread to additional sites.
This marks the first record of this Madagascan fungus in Gwent, which was originally found in the UK in 2012. We shared our discovery on the LERC Wales App and were thrilled to win SEWBReC's Record of the Week!
A big thank you to everyone who joined us today! We look forward to continuing our exploration of the wild.
Happy foraging!
