I've been volunteering at the woods since the spring of 2019 and I'm proud to have been part of the old project, which saw the woods transformed.
When I first moved to Duffryn I didn't even know the woodland was there! I was even a little afraid to enter it on my first volunteer session.
Now I see people walking their dogs, children playing and people enjoying the apples in the orchard. The woods are where I can let go of the stresses of work, enjoy nature and give back to my community.
There are still challenges, on this session we found the remnants of a burnt-out car at the top entrance. We'd only planned to remove non-native, invasive laurel saplings and light litter, so we didn't have the equipment or time to remove this mess. We remain stoic though and will be back next time with the tools for the job.
Other areas of the woodland were looking good with no new fly-tips, and we discovered fungus popping up everywhere!
If you see a fire, report it immediately. Don't attempt to tackle fires that can't be put out with a bucket of water – leave the area as soon as possible and call 999.
