SSI South Area - overview watersheds (colour coded, CRD, 2018) & watershed note area
From our ongoing South Island, Freshwater Cataloguing an unnamed creek - "creek-to-be-named XXX" - notes on the "2122" watershed area. Cf. the SSI FWC webmap for field locations and charted information (where available).
The content of these "Notes" entries is dependant on the information that is currently available, from FWC volunteer work, FWC reporting or from other sources. We need volunteers in this area.
Note - if you have additional insights into this area (the watershed, it's creeks or wetlands), can help with site(s) access, or are interested in being involved in data collection for this project area, please contact the SSIFWC Project Lead.
For now these notes draw heavily extracts from our monthly FWC "Which Creek Is It" Competition, from our Salt Spring Island FreshWater Catalogue Watershed Stewardship Group Facebook page, with "field note" addendums where additional information has become available. Additional volunteer resources and research for watershed notes development will enable us to do more!
We have no regular FWC data collected from the this Capel Keppel "2122" watershed area, creek-to-be-named XXX. A local volunteer effort would help establish year-round flow(?) and chemistry baseline data, and an analysis of watershed surface water and groundwater baseflow(?) discharge to the sea. The latter surface/ground water flow parameters are components of any planned watershed/areal water budget or water balance work, with potential uses for validating areal groundwater recharge potential models in this more isolated south island Cape Keppel area.
Creek-to-be-named XXX is located in the long, narrow south island, "2122" watershed. The creek's path and watershed and drainage/catchment areas are limited. Creek-to-be-named (C2BN) XXX (another in that famous "CTBN series") was our September, 2021 Which Creek Is It (WCIT) competition entry, with images taken from the coast, at/around the creek's sea-outfall. The current "2122" watershed outline(s) for this area (and perhaps for the adjacent, narrow, elongate watersheds immediately to the northwest) are inconsistent with the mapped (and partly ground-truthed).
Local watershed area maps and creek images
Creek-to-be-named XXX at it's sea outfall drains into Satellite Channel. This may be a single creek supporting the 2112 watershed surface freshwater flow and discharge to sea. Further work is required to ground-truth this and associated creek(s) distribution and watershed(s) boundaries in this area of the island.
The Creek-to-be-named XXX and approximate 2122 watershed creek flow path(s) may originate at/close to the foot of Mount Tuam to the northeast.
The 2122 watershed is small in size, a candidate for the smallest watershed on the island , some 27 hectares (71 acres) in size (smaller in size than the 2078 and 2082, SOUTH island; and 9077, CENTRAL SE of Ruckle island watersheds)
The 2112 watershed as defined receives something like 271,700,000 litres (71,775,500 gallons) of rainfall (precipitation, or surface water) per annum. By comparison with some of the island’s biggies(!) this surface catchment volume is tiny.
The watershed has a no subsurface wells! It is not clear if there is any local shallow water and surface creek abstraction within the watershed area.
Based on very limited seasonal FWC field data the lower part of the 2122 creek system, (flowing through the summer) may be groundwater (baseflow) fed.
Note - abstractions from shallow wells and surface creeks are candidates for "casual" water intake (and ecosystems!) contamination by anthropogenic activities, and it has happened, so please look after our creeks!

Note - any local insights, or interested in contributing to the historical/other notes on our islands' watersheds, please contact the SSIFWC Project Lead.
There is insufficient FWC data to report-out on this 2122 watershed/creek area. A great mapping project candidate (watershed boundary refinements and creek systems definition).
