Freshwater Catalogue watershed codes - a watershed mnemonic/abbreviation field site prefix, used to cluster regular field sites by watershed, supporting data gathering and data analysis.

FWC Watershed Codes

A four digit watershed code prefix is used in our freshwater catalogue field sites. This prefix indicates in which island watershed a field location(s) is(are) based. The code allows field sites to be clustered by watershed for data entry (selected from a group in a scrollable list), and in watershed-oriented data analysis.

Regular FWC field sites have a defined watershed code, established as new areas/sites are established. This code is used, in conjunction with a field site name (capturing feature type and location), to ensure consistent recording of field data.

For new "regular" sampling sites a standard field location name is usually developed (from Other”, “xxxxx” field records) recorded in the app and then added to the default sites scroll list. Information on standard abbreviations used in site naming definition are available under App Location Names & Conventions. For more information on adding-in new, regular field sites for FWC data recording please contact the SSIFWC project lead.

Note: - for those watersheds without a formal watershed name we revert to the province’s four digit computer codes (cf the CRD SSI watersheds map) in our FWC watershed prefix naming scheme, and/or to a local watershed name used in the community .
