7 BASIC STEPS!
You are just seven simple steps away from exploring the virtual environments/worlds/islands of FrameVR. On this page you learn the basics: how to enter the islands, create an account, move around, jump to other places and talk to other visitors. It's all very easy, just follow the steps below!
And don't forget to have fun!
1. Do I need an account?
NO, you do NOT need an account to enter a Frame environment, unless the owner of the environment has restricted this. So your pupils/students do not need an account either.
If you want to enter without an account, just follow the link to a FrameVR island, there you will see the CONNECT button and the GUEST name above it, where you can fill in your own name. You can watch the video about this at the right -->>
Just fill in your name, click the CONNECT button and you are in. Other users will see you as a blue robot avatar and your name will float above it. If you want to change your looks as a GUEST, follow step 5.
But with an account you have more options. Like creating your own personal avatar, also FrameVR gives you three trial environments for free to experiment with. You can create an account using your email address or you can use your Google or Microsoft account.
Create your FrameVR account here: https://framevr.io/home/welcome
2. Use your regular web browser for FrameVR
Most likely you can jump into the virtual world using the web browser you use now watching this website. There is no need to install any software to start working with FrameVR. What the best web browser is?
On a PC you can use almost any browser, like: Chrome, Brave, Firefox or Microsoft Edge.
On a Apple Mac, iPhone or iPad you have to use the Safari browser.
On an Android Phone or tablet you can use the Chrome browser.
On a Chromebook you can use Chrome browser.
On a Meta Quest 2 or 3 you have to use the internal web browser of the headset. We strongly suggest you try VR headsets later, when you have more experience with FrameVR. We don't want you to get lost.
3. Jump to a FrameVR island
It is as easy as surfing on the internet, just click a link in your favorite browser. This link always starts with the website of FrameVR (framevr.io) followed by a slash / and the name of the environment.
So in total it could look like this: https://framevr.io/intheclassroom
The five language villages of the E-LIVE project are:
https://framevr.io/babbeldam (Dutch)
https://framevr.io/chatterdale (English)
https://framevr.io/parolay (French)
https://framevr.io/plauderstein (German)
https://framevr.io/villacharla (Spanish)
https://framevr.io/arcadia (the orientation island)
Or go to our VIRTUAL VISITS page in the Resources to see some more educational destinations.
4. How can I move?
With a QWERTY keyboard, you can use the W and S keys to move forward and back, the A and D keys to turn left and right. The Q and E keys moves your avatar to left or right without turning.
With an AZERTY keyboard (like in France), you can use the Z and S keys to move forward and back, the Q and D keys to turn left and right. The A and E keys moves your avatar to left or right without turning.
You can go faster holding the SHIFT key. With the mouse you can double click on the spot you want to move to.
Press the F key and you can fly and walk through walls, use the Page Up and Down to go higher and lower. Pressing the F key again will disable flying. Note that flying can be disabled by the admin or teacher.
Press and hold the Z key (or W at the AZERTY keyboard) will make your avatar clap hands (applaud).
On a mobile device there is a blue dot on your screen to move. And to look around you have to swipe your screen. Check out the video, where you can see how that looks -->>
5. How does my avatar look?
You avatar can be either a Robot, a Human or a Ready Player Me avatar.
When you are logged in for the first time, your avatar is a blue robot. You can check it by pressing the C button on your keyboard. You will see the robot and you can select which color it should be.
But you can also select a Human avatar and here there are more options to choose from.
The third option is the Ready Player Me (RPM) avatar, this is loaded from an external website for which you also need an account. The RPM website can be found here: https://readyplayer.me/
Check the video to see how this is done -->>
If you want to see your avatar while moving around you can press the V button on your keyboard to switch from first person view to third person view.
6. Go to other places.
You can go to other places at FrameVR by changing the URL link at the top, if you know the name of the other island. But the owner of an island can also suggest some other islands by putting the links under the GO TO button, at the top of your screen.
These links can also be linked to a spot on the same island, or to a web page. Every island can have its own set of GO TO links.
Check the video to see how that looks and works -->>
7. Talk to others.
At the bottom of your screen there are some icons, the three icons at the left are Microphone, Megaphone and Webcam. These can be used to switch the mic or webcam on and off.
Choosing which microphone or webcam you use can be done in the settings which is the icon that looks like a flower at the right. there you can choose 'Audio/Video settings'.
Check the video to see how that looks and works, it's an older video, the right-click on the mic is not working anymore (see above) -->>
This is an old video, you can not right-click on the microphone anymore, you have to select the SETTINGS icon at the bottom (looks like a flower) and select the Audio/Video settings there.
This video will be updated soon...
