As a Warrior Fortu, Kor'Keth is far more involved in the struggles and machinations of modern politics than many of the other Fortu. He is sought after when war is afoot, and carefully metes out who he sides with and who he does not.
Kor'Keth is the commander of an elite mercenary troop called the "Stone Talons", although they operate independently of him as often as under his direct command, The troop is not large (around 250 strong) and is a special operations force rather than a main battlefield unit. His troops are fanatically loyal to him, partially because has a very successful record as a mercenary, and partially because of his command presence and dedication to those under him.
The Stone Talons are an elite mercenary battalion, although unlike more common mercenaries, they accept and decline missions on a more nuanced basis than pure money. The Stone Talons have a training camp in Northern Tolnia, but this is not a permanent installation and the camp has moved locations at several times in their 30 year history. At least a third of the members of the battalion have been with it the entire lifetime of the unit, and troop morale is extremely high.
Although Kor-Keth is the leader of the Stone Talons he does not always fight with them and it is more common for individual companies to take on separate missions, or on rare occasions even individual maniples. On occasions were there have been large battles, clearly in defense of the Prime, the Stone Talons have shown up spontaneously to fight without a contract, though they always integrate into the existing command structure rather than operating independently on these occasions.
A Maniple is composed of a unit of ten soldiers. This includes a Sergeant (commanding) and a Prism (magical support and communications).
Sometimes a Maniple operates as two Hands with the Sergeant and Prism plus three soldiers in the "Right Hand", and the Second (second in command) and four other soldiers in the "Left Hand".
The soldiers in the Stone Talons are highly cross trained, but the equipment and tactics of a Maniple depend on the Company they are in.
A Company is a unit composed of four Maniples plus a Command Squad.
The Command Squad typically has a Captain, Prism, two Scouts and a Healer.
The equipment and tactics of a Company depend on it's role:
Heavy Company is heavily armored and warded infantry. They can use chariots to deploy quickly but are mainly for holding choke points.
Regular Company are the most versatile covering melee and ranged. These units can handle most kinds of missions.
Skirmisher Company specialize in fast movement and stealth to perform complex maneuvers, ambushes, sabotage or scouting missions.
All units can equip as either infantry or calvary depending on the need.
The Battalion is composed of:
One Heavy Company
Three Regular Company
One Skirmisher Company (Commandos)
A Command Squad
An Artillery Squad (for magical defense)
A Sapper Squad (for fortification and demolition)
A Logistics Squad (for transport and supply chain)
The Battalion also employs a series of Solo Spies and Scouts to assess the battlefield and infiltrate opposing forces and cities.
The Stone Talon are an extremely elite group and their composition is very different than many (including having members from normally hostile races that operate together, like Elves, Dwarves and Na-Kor).
Only about 50% of the Stone Talons are Human with the remainder covering a wide range of races including (Elf, Dwarf, Gnome, Lizardman, Orc, Half-Devil, Ogre...) . The Spies and Scouts also include a Shapeshifter and a Lythar. A few specialized troops have limitations/capabilities based on the environment and are attached on a specific mission basis only (can only operate in darkness, underwater, in high mana zones...)
All of the soldiers have significant combat training and are elite fighters. All of the pure magicians/priests are in one of the support squads, but as many as a quarter of the combatants have some form of magical/paladin training they use in battle. The selection of magical and fighting backgrounds is very diverse but they have spent a lot of time in training to act as a unit and coordinate well.
Kor-Keth has arranged for other Fortu to fight with them on occasion (especially Strategy) but he is the only Fortu permanently attached to the unit.
The unit has extremely high discipline and Stone Talon troops never trash the area they are in , pillage or rape after a battle, or fight with other units they are encamped with, etc. However, discipline ends at physical disruption. The units are composed of extremely grizzly and sometimes low individuals and there is no attempt to make them appear "polished" or even "civilized".
The Stone Talon recruits for brains as well as brawn, and though a vast number of languages are spoken in camp, the average soldier knows enough of them that communication is always possible. Some fluency in Battle Code and Dorian is required by all.
Stone Talon armor is warded against enchantment as well as physical damage. The units do not generally take missions that are far off plane, but they have operated in all manner of hostile environments on the Prime (and in nearby planar pockets).
