Career pathways
Film music composer
Composers for films are expected to produce and record their music to deliver a final product. This will often include implementing their own music into the product. They will also have to deal with the business side of things such as managing the rights, contract, fees, music preparation and hiring of musicians. The composers should be able to compose in a DAW such as logic, nuendo etc. and, when recording live instruments, should be able to work with basic notation software such as sibelius. Becoming a film composer requires you to have a formal education in music composition which includes GCSEs and A-levels and ability to play at least one musical instrument. At the moment, my main instrument is violin but I have dabbled with vocal and piano skills. I also already have a GCSE music qualification and hope to gain a further qualification from this course. Film music has always had a special significance for me, especially the music of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and having the chance to compose such music as a career would be great.

Musical theatre roles
Although I haven't been trained in dance and acting, I believe my singing and instrumental ability would suffice for a role in the musical theatre area, even if not for an acting role but in the pit instead. When applying for roles such as this, networking and getting to know people plays a huge role in finding productions to be a part of. As someone who mainly plays violin, I believe this would be even more beneficial in finding roles in this area as it is one of the most common instruments found in bands like this. Popular shows such as Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables have several orchestral sort violin parts written in, and shows like Moulin Rouge have a few violin solo parts. As a pit musician, there are some important qualities to have which may have you noticed by contractors, or even other members, such as being good to work with and being able to follow a singer or other musician. Unlike a typical orchestral group, there is more to playing in a pit band than just virtuosic playing. Being able to express emotion and tell a story through your playing is arguably more important than being at an exceptionally high level technique wise.
