[Verse 1]
That most days I don't recognize me
That these shoes and this apron
Have taken more than I gave them
[Verse 2]
It's not easy to know
I'm not anything like I used to be
I was never attention's sweet center
[Chorus]
She's imperfect, but she tries
She is hard on herself
She is broken and won't ask for help
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is gone, but she used to be mine
[Verse 3]
Sometimes life just slips in through a backdoor
Who makes you believe it's all true
And now I've got you
[Verse 4]
And you're not what I asked for
If I'm honest, I know I would give it all back
[Bridge]
Who'll be reckless, just enough
Who'll get hurt
But who learns how to toughen up
And gets used by a man who can't love
And be scared of the life that's inside her
Growing stronger each day
'Til it finally reminds her to fight just a little
To bring back the fire in her eyes
That's been gone, but used to be mine
[Outro]
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is gone, but she used to be mine
'She used to be mine' is a powerful song originally written by Sara Bareilles for her musical adaptation of the film musical, which shares the same name. This song is sang by Jenna, the protagonist of the show who, at the time, is pregnant and in a relationship with her abusive husband and is looking back, reflecting on who she used to be. Bareilles explained the meaning behind the song in a reddit AMA (ask me anything) saying; 'I wrote it for the scene in the movie where the lead character, Jenna, feels like she's lost all hope of saving herself from her terrible situation, and she's reflecting on who she thought she would have become'. Singer and actor Jeremy Jordan performed this song at the annual MisCast gala, at which many famous Broadway stars perform songs from roles in which they would never be cast. In his version, he adds his own twists to some parts of the song.
