The 1950s was the kick-off for our performance projects on the course, first song of which was 'hound dog' by Elvis Presley. This song is a classic, well known 50s rock song which strongly follows the 12-bar blues structure. Overall, this was a very simple song to learn to play and also very interesting to insert a part for the violin to play along.Â
Another song we decided to play was 'put your head on my shoulder' by Paul Anka. The complete opposite of hound dog, this song was a classic love ballad, and I personally loved this choice as the violin fit in perfectly with this musical style. This song definitely allowed the acoustic side of our band to shine and, in my opinion, really set us apart from the other bands during our performances. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any rehearsal footage for this song.
Our final song for the 50s was our creative cover of the song 'valerie' by the Zootons. Similarly to 'put your head on my shoulder', 'valerie' was a much more laid-back song that fit the acoustic instruments in our band perfectly. To make things more interesting, we decided to add a half-time section in the middle and also split the vocals of the song between two of our band members. When it came to the day of the performance, we were unfortunately unable to perform this song due to a lack of time.
