Acrylic on paper
January 11, 2013
On January 11, 2013 Kendrick's body, 17, was found rolled up in a mat in the gymnasium of Lowndes HS in Valdosta, Georgia. The first autopsy performed on him concluded the death was an accident. Johnson’s family had a private pathologist perform a 2nd autopsy which concluded that he had died from blunt force and trauma. On June 20 of 2016 the US DOJ said they wouldn’t be filing any criminal charges related to his death. His family later filed a civil lawsuit of 100 million dollars against 38 individuals for conspiring to cover up the homicide. After the 3rd autopsy was performed it was shown that he had newspapers inside of his stomach which had torn up his intestines, and was later discovered that the funeral home didn’t receive his organs from the coroner. Around the time of his death there had been 2+ hours of footage missing from the school’s surveillance cameras. Many believed that if Kendrick had been white the execution and punishments of this case would have been more severe and justice would’ve been served. However all of the investigators and officers who were assigned to this case were white which greatly influenced the execution and conclusions of Johnson’s case.
