What is a Custody Sergeant? A Custody Sergeant is someone who stays within the grounds of the police station and helps with the arrest and processing of suspects that are brought in. Custody Sergeants will engage with the suspects and help create RP within the station. Below are a few ways they can do that, as well as a Custody Sergeants roles and responsibilities.
As a Custody Sergeant, you will remain in a Metropolitan Police Station of your choice and will assist with processing suspects. You will engage with the public that arrive at the help desks, give them answers to their questions and be an overall help. You will have the ability to remove people from Police grounds, providing you have a valid reason behind doing so.
Custody Sergeant is open to all members of ERPT that are Senior Reponse Officer+. The Custody Sergeant training can be conducted by a Specialist Response Officer+.
When booking somebody into custody, you should read the suspect their rights which can be seen below:
“You do not have to say anything. But, it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something which you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence.”
Then announce to them that they have the rights to:
- Get legal Advice (Solicitor)
- Tell somebody where they are (Via phone call)
- Receive Medical help if needed (NHS)
- Food and Drink
You should then check the Suspects ID and confirm his name, age and appearance - the arresting officer can do this for you if need be.
After all this, you should first check if they are receiving any of the listed options above and allow them to do so. Then get the suspect to remove any items of clothing that they are wearing which could be used to inflict harm on either themselves or others. Then you may search the suspect under section 54 of the criminals evidence act, before continuing with the situation.
You're only allowed to do custody sergeant between 12pm and 1am.
Maximum 3 Custody Sergeants per Police Station.
No leaving Police grounds due to you not wearing visible police branded clothing, such as a Police Vest.
Must stick to the clothing provided in the clothing section.
Any trolling or misusage of the role and you will be removed
Caught money farming and you will be punished accordingly!
Must have ERPT Commands Authorisation before acting as a Custody Sergeant.
If trained, Senior Response Officer+ may do Custody Sergeant without authorisation.
