Exhibit 8

Motivational Picture

Background: I created this photo to put in a frame in my office. It is in reference to the poem by Erin Hanson: "There is freedom waiting for you, on the breezes of the sky, and you ask 'What if I fall?', oh but my darling, what if you fly." This makes me think that anything great that can be obtained comes with great risk as well. So often, we may focus on the risk and forget the greatness we can achieve if we succeed. This is meant to be encouragement to my graduate students and myself.

Design:

  • Contrast: This design focuses on light and dark contrast with the dark silhouette of the bird contrasting the light in the sky and the light color of the text contrasting the dark sky. The sans serif font contrasts the decorative font style.

  • Repetition: The color of the text was taken from the light in the sky in the photo to repeat these hues. The weight of both fonts are similar.

  • Alignment: The text is aligned with a 0.5 inch margin at the bottom and to the left of the left-most text. The text is aligned on the right. The text is place in the lower left of the design to begin a diagonal alignment with the bird to direct the eyes from the lower left to the next element in the upper right.

  • Proximity: The text was created to be in close proximity to each other to easily recognize the relationship. The bird was moved to be closer and more in line with the text.

  • Color: The color of the text was selected from one of the light colors in the sky.

Photoshop:

  • Horizontal text.

  • Bevel and emboss effect.

  • Inner shadow effect.

  • Convert to smart object.

  • Group layers.

  • Flip horizontal.

  • Content-aware move tool to move the bird.

  • Warp with "split warp horizontally" to extend the photo to fit the frame.

  • Forward warp tool in the liquify filter to adjust the dark clouds to create more dark space for the background of the text.

  • Guide layouts.

  • Eyedropper tool.
