Exhibit 4

Flyer for Pioneer Day Activity

Revised design above. Original design below.

Background: This flyer was created to advertise a church family history activity for pioneer day.

Design:

  • Contrast: The black color of the photos text and the darker gold color of the text contrast the lighter color of the background. The Engravers serif font contrasts the script font in weight and color.

  • Repetition: The text "FAMILY" repeats the black in the photos, tying together the word with the family pictures. The color of the script font was taken from a darker tint of the background.

  • Alignment: The text is aligned to the right of the page. The date and time are at the top for quick reference. The photos were offset to balance the space on the page.

  • Proximity: Related text is grouped with each piece of information separated. Text containing details are separated for quick reference to date and time and then additional details at the bottom.

  • Color: The black color of the "FAMILY" text relates to the black in the photos. The gold text matches a tint of gold from the background.

  • Additional design considerations: The script font was selected to honor my grandfather (pictured in the middle) who was known for his penmanship. As cursive is used less often now, this type of writing may be more often associated with our ancestors.

Photoshop:

  • Convert to smart objects

  • Guides to indicate printer margins.

  • Text boxes with vertical and horizontal text.

  • Adjustment to leading to adjust the space between the lines in the text.

  • Each photo was removed from the background using select subject and select and mask features.

  • Soft brushes used to soften edges of portraits.

  • Each element was created on a separate layer.

  • The eye dropper tool to match the color of the text to a color in the background

  • A duplicate background layer was created over the photos for a color blend which provided a consistent color for the photos which were slightly different shades.

Revisions:

After feedback, the following changes were made:

  • One picture was selected to be larger rather than have all pictures the same size. The photos were rearranged to accommodate for this change.

  • The date was adjusted to fit a single line with an bullet separating day and time

  • To adjust for the different sizes of pictures and new photos, the text at the bottom of the page was adjusted to move more horizontally, allowing for two line spaces for text and more space to move the photos.

  • I used the clone stamp to fill in some of the color of Emily's shirt to reduce the difference in shade caused by the original photo.

  • I added bevel and emboss and drop shadows to all text.
