Bee Photo

Original Photo

Background: I recently did some photography practice with bees as I appreciate their pollinating role and find them an interesting subject. I really liked this photo of a bee in flight and wanted to highlight the bee and the beautiful flowers by placing it on a black and white background.

Design:

  • Contrast: The bright colors of the bee and flower contrast the slightly darker black and white background. The purple and yellow colors naturally contrast.

  • Repetition: As I did not create the elements, no particular repetition was included.

  • Alignment: The bee is positioned in the upper left side of the photo, following the rule of thirds.

  • Proximity: With the cropping, the bee and the flower are close together with limited other elements in the photo.

  • Color: The colors were drawn from the original photo with some enhancement. The purple and yellow colors naturally contrast.

Photoshop:

  • Copy layer.

  • Object selection tool, quick selection tool, select and mask, refine edge tool, color decontamination, output to new layer and mask.

  • Adjustment layers: levels, curves, vibrance, hue and saturation, brightness/contrast.

  • Camera raw black and white filter.

  • Clipping layers.

  • Grouping layers.

Revisions:

This design was originally determined to be profession. I chose to make no revisions. Some peer comments included adjusting the hue and brightness to make the flower "pop" more. I decided to not make changes to preserve natural features of the flower as it is a lighter color.
