Setting- in all stories, place & time, conditions/environments

• no setting is also a setting
• some genres have more/less setting
  • setting in post-apocalyptic stories is vital
  • realism finds details in the setting crucial to story telling (verisimilitude world)
• characterization can be assisted by setting
  • describe contrasting characters/lifestyles/experiences
  • thematic relationships

Scope: Space

• social: race, socioeconomic status, sexuality, etc
  • a broad scope would have lots of variation
• geographic: natural or man-made, also refers to the movement/setting change
  • Broad: bay area to Tokyo to Mars
  • Narrow: CCSC to humanities to creative arts
• spacial: layout, physical organization of space
  • Broad vs narrow: house|| room , neighborhood || street

Span: Time

• historical: values, events that come with a time period
• duration: how long the story spans also what time of day
  • broad v narrow: 100 years || 1 day
