The Elles Shield was donated by the District Commissioner Colonel Arthur Warre Elles  in 1919.

Arthur Warre Elles was born on 16th June 1864, the son of Lieutenant-General Sir William Kidston Elles, KCB.  He was educated at Westward Ho (United Service Preparatory College from 1875-1877), Heidelberg, Clifton College and Sandhurst.  [https://www.dnw.co.uk/auction-archive/lot-archive/lot.php?department=Medals&lot_id=112383]

He entered the army as a Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in 1883, and saw active service as a member of the Burmese Expedition of 1886-7 (the aftermath of the Third Anglo-Burmese War) [http://www.britishmedals.us/files/b87koyli.htm].

He had been promoted to Captain by 1893, when he was appointed to the personal staff of his father, who at that time was a Major-General commanding the Rawal Pindi District on the Punjab.  [https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/26437/page/4996/data.pdf]   A few months later in Rawal Pindi, he married Janet Fearse [https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000103/18931202/021/0006].

During the Second Boer War, he transferred to the 2nd Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and served on the staff, taking part in operations in the Transvaal (November 1900 - May 1901) and Cape Colony (May 1901 - February 1902).

The Times newspaper of 5th March 1902 reported that 'The Orient arrived at Southampton yesterday with 29 invalids for Netley, 66 for Woolwich, 248 men for Aldershot, 150 time-expired men for Brockhurst, and 66 details.'  Among the invalid officers was listed: '2/Yorks Light Infantry – Major A W Elles'.

He attained the rank of Colonel in 1910 and retired in 1914.  In the Great War he served as General Staff Officer (Grade 1) Eastern Command (1914-16); he was on the Recruiting Staff (1916-17) and on National Service (1918).  He was awarded the OBE for his wartime service, specifically for services to recruiting - perhaps related to or leading to his involvement in Scouting.
