Create a set list for your solo performance recital. Include your rationale for your song
choices and your initial ideas for how you plan to change each song to showcase your
creativity and musical skills. Ensure your recital is between 12-15 minutes long.
During this task i will be talking about my ideas on how i am going to successfully change 3 maybe 4 songs into different genres or styles. This will help me by expanding my music knowledge due to me having to research about these different genres and it will also bring out my creativity as i can change these songs in any way that i would like to.
I have decided that i would like to sing this song as a part of my repertoire because i really enjoy listening to the song and think it would sound really cool with some of the stylistic changes that i have in mind. As this song is quite complex heavy metal i think it would sound very unique and different if i completely stripped back the instrumentation and turned the song into a more pretty sounding ballad, more focussing on the lyrics rather than the heavy complex instruments within the song. Another idea i have had was to potentially have someone accompanying me playing either acoustic guitar or piano, i would prefer it to be done on acoustic guitar but depending on who is available to accompany me will be the decider as to weather its done on piano or guitar. Due to the vocal line being so strong i feel that it would work great with my vocals as its in my range but also still quite difficult to sing, i think it would sound so much more angelic as a ballad instead of heavy rock. Ballads also tend to be in a minor key therefore if this song isn't already i will change it to being minor.
I have decided to sing this song as part of my repertoire because Billie Eilish is one of my main musical influences and i feel like i could turn this song into a jazz song rather than pop. In order to do this i will slow the song down quite a bit and sing it with more of a jazzy feel to it. My inspiration to turn this song in to jazz is specifically At last by Etta James, i want to try to make this song sound alike that song. Due to being a vocalist its quite difficult for me to change the song a lot so as i am having someone play acoustic guitar for me for my first song i will see if someone in the class would be able to play piano for me. I also might change around the structure of this song to make it sound more interesting and complex, along with a potential key change.
This song is already key g minor therefore i might change the key to F or Bb in order to make it sound more jazzy. i will also slow this song down quite a bit to give me time to add in different jazzy elements such as potentially scat singing, this is when you vocalise to a melody but dont actually use words whilst your singing.
I have decided to change my final song from Medication to Ex's & Oh's because whilst listening to medication more i realised that it wasn't the greatest choice in the first place, the lyrics are quite explicit and the song overall is no longer something i would like to perform. Ex's & Oh's was written in the key E minor and for this song i would like to also turn into jazz. In order to successfully do this i think for this song that i will change the key into either F, Bb, Eb or Ab major because these are commonly used in jazz songs.
In order to achieve this i will again ask someone in my class( most likely Casey) to play guitar for me and this will create a completely different vibe for this song, i want this song to have an airy, haunting, slow vibe that will give off such a deeper emotion from the lyrics.
I am no longer singing this song as i don't quite think it fits with the ideas i have, this was one of the songs that seemed like a great idea first but then when i thought about it i realised it was'nt something that i wanted to sing.
The third song i have decided that i want to sing is Medication by Damian an Stephen Marley, i have chosen this song as although i have only listened to it a few times i really enjoy it. To change this song i have had the idea to change the structure and pull apart the song a bit more to give the song a completely different vibe. Once again i will have someone playing aside me with either piano or acoustic guitar.
For my final performance to start off my set i will first perform my acoustic ballad version of Rooftops by Lost Prophets, Casey will play guitar alongside me. For my second song i will be singing a jazz version of Bad Guy by Billie Eilish, i am no longer going to have this song played on piano, Lucy is going to play guitar alongside me and i will change this song into either they key of F or Bb to make it sound more like jazz. This song will also probably end up being a bit longer than the original version as i will be singing it slower and also want more space between each lyric so that i can freestyle a bit more. For my final song i will be singing Ex's & Oh's by Elle King, this song will be played on piano by Emily although i'm still not sure weather it will be played live or weather it will be recorded. This song is also going to be turned into jazz and i personally think that out of all the songs i have chosen this could be my favourite as i can already picture this song being jazz.
