Performing rights society
PRS stands for the performing rights society, according to https://www.prsformusic.com/#:~:text=Welcome%20to%20PRS%20for%20Music,partnerships%2C%20technology%20and%20influencing%20policy. , the performing rights society licence the use of their members online, by businesses,, for live performances and recording products. They pay royalties to members for using their work whilst also protecting the future of music through many other things such as technology, partnerships and influencing policy. Performing rights royalties are generally paid to artists or songwriters whenever a music composition has been performed or recorded and been put out publicly. As a part of the PRS, performance royalties can be made from many different kind of things within the industry, some of these include Live performance royalties, theatre royalties, dj royalties and radio royalties.
I would like to be an independent singer/ songwriter hopefully on stage one day releasing some of my original work. I want people to understand me and understand me through my music and the power and emotion within the lyrics i write and perform. If i was to become a singer/ songwriter, there are many different ways in which that i could make money from my music. As a songwriter you would first have to find a decent publisher in order to release your music, sometimes you can get paid directly from the publishing company for the music in which you created. Depending on the level of success you endure, it can be a much more flexible arrangement to be paid directly from your publisher. There isnt a specific amount of money that songwriters earn, it all depends on the opportunities that the artist has had and also the level of success that an artist has. To start out you must take every opportunity that you have, take as many gigs as you can, post on social media, try and get yourself out there in order to attempt to build a fan basis.
Musician-
I would also enjoy it if i was able to become a full time musician. Being a musician is quite a broad term, what i would prefer to do in this sector would be to become a session musician or even potentially working in the entertainment industry being either working in hotels or even maybe on a cruise ship. Being a musician you can potentially earn from between £2000 and £5000 per month although depending on the level of success you gain you can definitely exceed this amount. Due to me feeling so strongly about becoming a singer/ songwriter, this isn't a roll i could see myself being in permanently but i would 100% look into doing it as something on the side as a more part time job roll. Although i am not very confident in playing an instrument right now, i am in the process of learning to play piano so in a years time i am hoping to be much more comfortable and confident in playing.
Performer/ recording artist-
Another possible job opportunity that i could do would be to become a performer/ a recording artist. I think being a performer could be a really fun and challenging job to do, i already enjoy performing on stage so in order to further my skills in this field i will continue what i am already doing and try to get videos of me performing on all social media platforms. According to https://uk.indeed.com/career-advice/pay-salary/how-much-does-musician-make the average amount for a musician to earn is £19365 but this does differ depending on weather your an independent artist or weather you are signed to a label.
