Singer/ Songwriter
I am interested in this job roll as i feel it lines up with everything i want to do and achieve, i also really enjoy writing my own music and want other people to be able to listen and hear my own songs. To become a singer/ songwriter i think a good way to start getting out there in the industry would be to ensure that you are promoting yourself through as many social media platforms as possible such as Tik Tok, Instagram, Youtube or even twitter. By doing this, more people will view your profile and hopefully follow you along your musical journey. You could also go to university to further study and improve your skills, The Point Blank music school offers a course in music production and songwriting, it is located in Shoreditch in London which is a great place to go if you want to start a career in the music industry. In this programme you learn more about songwriting and how to captivate your audience, whilst learning more about writing you will also be being taught music production skills and you will also gain those skills as you will be producing and marketing your music to a professional standard. As well as learning some really useful and amazing skills on this course you will also have regular masterclasses with industry professionals, you'l do workshops and also open mic nights. Another thing that will really help you as a singer/ songwriter would be if you have the ability to play an instrument or to learn an instrument as you want to be able to accompany yourself whilst performing on a stage or doing whatever your doing. In order to become a singer/ songwriter you dont necessarily need to have any experience, its all about having passion and loving what you are doing. Saying this it does obviously help if you have written songs in the past or if you have had any experience singing or performing in the past. As a songwriter you can make money in many different ways, such as different types of royalties. Mechanical royalties are generated when music is produced onto a CD, Vinyl or downloaded whereas performance royalties are made through doing live performances like tours, concerts, busking or gigs. In order to receive performance royalties you have to be registered with a collecting society, you will receive quarterly payments in their distributions. Also the amount of money that you are paid really depends on how successful you become as a writer, you can sometimes get paid directly for the music that you created but you have to be signed with a music publishing company. As I have said previously, the best way to get your work recognised is to ensure you are promoting yourself online and taking every opportunity that you can get your hand on.
Music teacher in college- If i am unsuccessful in being a singer/songwriter, something that i would potentially look into doing would be teaching music at a college. In order to become a music teacher in a college, the minimum qualification that you must have is a BA in music and you should also complete an MA in music. Most places hiring music teacher look for around three years of previous work experience in order to ensure they have the correct knowledge and experience to do the job. This does differ if you are wanting to teach music privately but if you are looking to work within a school or university you will have to go to university. Although i think this would be a really fun path to go down, i am not planning on going to university at this point but that could change in the future.
Events planner- Something else that i think would be a fun career path to go down would be some sort of events planning as i know that this is something that isn't to difficult to go into. The main thing that you need to do if you are an events planner is to promote yourself, weather that be through Tik Tok, Instagram or facebook. As long as you are making sure that people can see what you are doing, eventually you will gain followers and people will want to come to the gigs or events that you put on. Though it isnt hard to become an events planner you definitely need to think about your personal budget and how you are planning to pay for venues. On average around Exeter the average place for a venue hire is between 200 and 500 pounds and though this sound like quite a bit of money, through ticket sales and depending on how well the event goes you will likely make that amount back. If you are unsure of how to start out in the event planning sector there are also many places that offer apprenteships for event planning, for example https://eventacademy.com/career/work-placement-and-apprenticeship-options-for-event-management/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAt4C-BhBcEiwA8Kp0CShPNgrHkRQmKb_S5xHBb5Lg8xeWD_IBYTejphD8pEkjiVz7eHf2EhoC370QAvD_BwE .
