Work experience
In the past i have worked a few different jobs though none of them have been to do with the music industry, i worked at a diner as a waitress and i also worked at Tesco as a temp over Christmas. Although the jobs that i have previously worked are not within the industry, i still feel like some of the skills i aquired from doing them will help me along within the music industry. For example before having these jobs i had absolutely no people skills and struggled to ask for help when i needed it. Getting a job forced me to stand out of my comfort zone and do things i didnt want to do, despite this not being related to music i feel like i am a more confident person overall for doing it.
Some suitable work opportunities for under 18s could be being an events planner meaning that you would be the person that performers would come to if they were thinking about doing a gig or performance of some kind. This is something i know of that is 100% possible to be doing as well as college because i know many people in college currently who are doing this and earning money for it. Something you would need to look at would be your own budgeting for paying for venues that you want to put gigs on at. The average price to hire out a venue around Devon and Exeter can range from between 200 and 500 pounds, although this may seem a lot you are likely to earn a good amount of the money back through ticket sales depending on how well you have marketed yourself and got yourself out there. The Event Academy offer courses in events management and with this students are guaranteed a three month work placement within either an events agency, venue or a company of their choice.
The sound gallery- The sound gallery offers a work experience programme for young people called STIMPI, this is aimed for people who want to excel in music and make a career within the music industry. It includes a studio induction and studio tour along with mixing and recording sessions. This gives you the chance to create, record and mix one of your own songs and even potentially make a music video. There are so many benefits included if you do this work experience, your knowledge would be vastly expanded and it would give you more confidence. You also would get to meet and collaborate with new people, this is something i think is very important as a musician as you will at some point in your career have to work with new people that dont necessarily work in the same way as you do. I have personally worked in the sound gallery once to record a song with my band, this was a really amazing opportunity as it gave me a taster of what its like to work in a studio. Although this probably would not be my first choice to do work experience here, if there was ever an opportunity i would take it.
