Reflection - 2c Managing Classroom Procedures
With virtual learning it was important to establish a small, central set of shared routines and procedures to develop a sense of belongingness and shared identity. Prior to the state of the lesson all expectations and netiquette for online learning (e.g., always be on mute, unmute before speaking, when it’s ok to use the chat feature, how to leave/return if something comes up at home) where practiced. Students were told to use emojis and "raise your hand" functions appropriately during the lesson as an established, nonverbal way to ask questions, raise concerns, or indicate understanding.
Google Classroom is used for posting all learning material, classwork, assignments and projects. The software also allows for posting due dates and sending email reminders. Clear and consistent labeling for assignments and activities, are used so students know where to find resources, due dates, and other important information. There is a built in grade book which is helpful as it allows students to track their own progress. Routines for whole group, small group, and independent learning blocks are also pre-established and quickly created using Zoom breakout rooms.
