Reflection - 1b Demonstrate Knowledge of students
In March 2020 the COVID 19 pandemic resulted in my sudden shift to full virtual classes. This change resulted in me starting the 2020-2021 academic year with students I have never seen to date, although all classes are synchronous. The School District's policy is that student my choose to attended classes with their cameras on, needless to say they all opt out.
In order to know my students I had to find creative ways as outlined below:
Use breakout rooms to conduct one-on-one student interviews to understand context and immediate needs.
Assign projects such as a presentative entitled 'it's all about me' and 'talking to self'
Daily social-emotional needs activities as apart of established routine for learning and checking in with students.
Begin each session with a 'Do Now' poll or prompt that allows students to make connections to the content and their own lived experience.
Collaborate with other colleagues who work with your students to create a shared system for storing, tracking, and updating student profiles and priorities.
Exit tickets - use 'Padlet' or a shared document to allow students to write or discuss personal connections in small or whole groups at the end of each session.
