For our Learning Design we used Instructional Design. This is used to define the activities that will guide the development of homework and projects online. It allows teachers to communicate the purpose and reason behind a strategy, allowing students to develop a better understanding.
This design consists of determining the state and the needs of the learners, explaining and defining the end goal.
This google site for Understanding Basic Nutrition in our Daily Diet provides basic information to students to learn about nutrition in our daily diet and the impacts it has on one's daily health. As our website includes some short yet wordy readings, video explanations, and assignments, our target audience are those in high school (grades 10-12), higher education, sport teams, and individuals looking to benefit themselves by learning about nutrition and their diets.
For our Interactive Learning Resource we implemented the Constructivism learning theory. Throughout our resource, learners will have the opportunity to explore different content through different ways such as videos, blog posts and small group conversations. Learners have the opportunity to explore the content at their own pace, allowing them to construct new understandings through their experience.
The constructivism learning theory says that "learners do not acquire knowledge and understanding by passively perceiving it within a direct process of knowledge transmission, rather the construct new understandings and knowledge through experience and social discourse" (quote found on Wikipedia)
Our Interactive Learning Resource includes many different options of learnings. Therefore, for each topic we provide all of videos, readings, and images that would allow people with different learning strengths and weaknesses to choose how they learn the information required for the course. For example, learners who are full-time workers/single parents, or have a loss of hearing all appreciate these different learning choices. This is because not only is our course online and super flexible for those who do not have time to physically attend class, but we include all of video, images, texts, and readings. This is important because learners who have hearing loss now have the option to either read the text provided, or watch videos with subtitles that they can read.
We decided to create our Interactive Learning Resource completely online using Google Sites. We felt that by creating a fully online course, our learners will be able to manage their time as needed and access the course whenever they have time to. As long as all assignments are completed before the last day of class, students will have the flexibility to complete this class while working around their busy schedules.
Each topic will include two assignments, one formative (ungraded) and one summative (graded). The formative assessments will allow learners to interact with either their instructors or peers, or both, to get feedback on their understanding of material. The summative assignments will go toward your final grade; these are worth 25% each.
For our assignments, we have included interactive resources such as Kahoot, quizlet, and even a website where you can create your own personalized diet plate!
