The four OTD students on this DEx team created an extensive literature review on consultation and collaboration journal articles over the course of eight weeks. They also attended a weekly Journal Club to discuss various evidence-based articles for each developmental area of focus in the OT resource packets (including motor, vision, sensory, and self-regulation), which were provided to the sites. This review of literature helped to ensure all activities provided were supported by evidence, as reiterated in conversations with site mentors. It also addressed the group’s goal of learning more about each of these topics. Below is the collective compilation of the summaries for all of the articles they read and discussed together.
Articles discussed in the Consultation and Collaboration table below outline the importance of occupational therapy consultation and collaboration with other professionals by highlighting positive patient outcomes, common interprofessional goals, greater understanding of the needs and context of the population, and improved patient satisfaction due to these methods. By completing this literature review, this WNE OTD student gained a comprehensive understanding of collaboration and consultation, with examples of strong and successful use of these methods in other programs. This served as a blueprint for assuming a consulting role to assist Springfield Public Schools and Behavioral Health Network, and navigating a collaborative relationship with our contacts for these sites, Megan Hopper and Lisa Pasternak.
