Flashback Technique

  • Start with a scene narrating an unforgettable memory related to the main story.

  • Insert your main story in the middle.

  • End with the same scene that you began with.

Flashback (1)

Start: “Clean up your room!” came my mother’s booming voice. I was shocked out of my afternoon nap. Christmas was around the corner and my mother wanted me to clean up my room before my relatives came to visit us. While I was dusting the shelves, I stumbled across an old journal. I flipped through it, and paused at a long entry titled (topic). As I read it, memories of that day flashed through my mind…

(Insert main story)

End: “Stop daydreaming and get back to your work!” my mother hollered shrilly. I was jolted back to reality, and immediately called back, “Coming!”

Inspired by what I had just read, I went onto social media to share my thoughts about (topic). I hoped others would be inspired too.

Flashback (2)

Start: I was tidying up my room one afternoon when I stumbled across an old photo frame under my bed. I dusted it, revealing the face of someone all too dear to me – XXX. Instantaneously, memories of that day flooded my mind…

(Insert main story)

End: My phone rang, jolting me back to reality. I smiled/wiped a tear away as I put the photo away and picked up the phone. It was XXX. “Do you still remember the day when you/we/I……………,” I gushed.
