I beings my chapter recapping the origins of the Luddites, who took part in a socio-economic movement to prevent technology from harming society, and particularly those least able to protect themselves. I then use the current push for AI in education as an example of how educators in general, and school librarians in particular, are uniquely positioned to caution education communities about the rapid introduction of new technologies in educational environments, and the possible harmful impacts of emerging technologies on students.
Although the term "digital natives" has (thankfully) fallen out of favor in education, the concept that students arrive at school with knowledge about and skills in using technology still persists. I refute this belief and outline some of the ways educators in general must resist this fallacy, and the ways that school librarians are uniquely positioned to not only help push back on this incorrect assumption, but to help students and staff improve their technological literacy and learn about the underpinnings of technology so they can be informed users.
I was chosen by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) to be a monthly contributor to the online Knowledge Quest blog in mid-2018.
Each month, I share some thoughts about the field of school librarianship.
"Virtuous Cycles and Death Spirals: The Importance of Being an Active Collaborator" was published in the April 2019 online edition. The article emphasizes the importance of school librarians taking an active role in seeking out teacher collaborations.

"The Janus Decision: A Chance for School Librarian Leadership" was published in both the print and online editions of the October 2019 issue. This article focuses on the importance of SLMS advocacy and leadership in the wake of the June 2018 Supreme Court decision in Janus v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, a court case which fundamentally undermined education unions.

"End Literacy Shaming" was published in both the print and online editions of the Nov/Dec 2019 issue. In this article, I further expanded on the concept of literacy shaming, why it is such an insidious force in education, and how easily it can be overcome with some reflection on the part of educators.

"Classroom v. School Libraries: Not All Libraries are Created Equal" was published in both the print and online editions of the November 2020 issue. This piece is intended to warn against replacing school libraries with classroom libraries, a trend that seems to be taking root in schools across the country. It exposes some of the fallacies that are sometimes used to justify this switch.

I was first introduced to being an on-air personality when Amy Hermon invited me to discuss literacy shaming on her podcast School Librarians United.
I've been fortunate enough to chat with Amy several times over the years.
