Written by player, with guidance from GM about Tabaxi coming from Taladas:
In one of the most remote and unexplored regions of Krynn lies a swamp on the south eastern coast of Taladas known as the Great Reed Delta. After Hiteh's Night, when fire and rock rained down from the Heavens, a vast area of land was sunken by the devastation. It became the final destination for the rivers that run through Eastern Taladas before they drained in to the sea. This enormous swamp is also home to one of Krynn’s most unique and perhaps least known peoples, the Tabaxi. Jungle cats in humanoid form rumored to be made solely for the entertainment of Habbakuk. Thalia Bloodfang was one such wanderer. She lived a mostly solitary life living in the trees on the outskirts of the Great Reed Delta, hunting and allowing her curiosity to guide her steps. Some of her people chose to live among the Elves in the forests to the west, but Thalia preferred the life of a nomad to living in only one place, lest she miss out on some great adventure. Still her interactions with the Elves had been peaceful and mostly enjoyable, the same could not be said of the Ogres. A brutish people who seemed to care only for power, the Ogres of Taladas viewed the Tabaxi as either a trophy hunt, or pets to be tamed.
For some unknown reason more and more people were heading East as of late and nearly encroaching on Thalia’s swamp. These newcomers, observed from afar, appeared frightful or even frantic as they pushed out East. Guarding her solitude was reason enough to find out why, but the call of unknown was too much for her to resist. It didn’t take long investigating before she discovered squads of men covered head to toe in armor of various colors marking their companies. “I’m looking for volunteers for the Dragon Higlord’s army!” shouted a large man clad in blue armor. “My lady pays well and promises glory and conquest to any brave enough to follow.” Another man in his company nudged his friend and with a smile said in a low voice, “or any too slow to escape.” It seemed the cause of this undesired migration was this army “recruitment” of both the willing and the unwilling. Thalia valued her freedom highly, so the thought of conscription angered her. No one should be forced to serve against their will for a cause not their own. Taking on an entire company of soldiers was beyond her but Thalia vowed to fight this evil however she could, any way that didn’t get her killed of course.
She returned to her treetop dwelling in the east and pondered her discovery and the implications therein. As the sun dipped below the horizon the sky took on a reddish hue and Thalia began to prepare for the hunt. Hunting at night was easy for her because her eyes were attuned to the darkness and she could see better than her prey. A wild boar was trudging through the marsh back toward her den and Thalia tracked her movements looking for an opportunity to pounce on her unsuspecting prey. As the boar was about to pass under the tree where Thalia stood, a scream pierced the silence. Her quarry bolted in the opposite direction as she angrily looked up in the direction of the cry. A woman 30 yards ahead, a man 20 yards, a giant hulking Ogre 25 yards and closing fast on the fleeing man. As the man broke through the last line of trees his feet slowed as he hit the swampy marshland of the Great Reed Delta. Thalia knew Ogres were strong and even surprisingly fast for their size, but they were also heavy and each of the Ogre’s steps pushed deep in to the soft wet land. In one of the Ogre’s hands was a wooden club, that appeared to have been carved from the trunk of a large tree, and in the other hand steel shackles. It appeared the Ogres had joined the cause of these Dragon Highlords and were handling the “unwilling” half of recruitment. Her vow to fight this evil was put to the test before she had anticipated.
Leaping from the tree Thalia landed at a sprint toward the Ogre would be captor. With a bestial ferocity she pounced on the Ogre’s back before he could even react to her presence and bit deep in to his upper shoulder that was unprotected by his armor. The Ogre roared in pain and anger and reaching back grabbed Thalia and threw her from him. With a savage grin the Ogre made a guttural attempt at speaking common, “Human man pay good, but pretty kitty pay better!” Thalia had no intention of being made prisoner and circled toward the injured arm of the Ogre. His steps were slowed by the terrain, his club arm was slowed by the gash leaking green blood down his chest. Thalia ran at the Ogre again and narrowly dodged a backhand swipe of the giant’s club, but wasn’t fast enough to dodge the steel shackles that immediately followed the attack. Her cheek was cut by the force of the blow and the feeling of her blood running down her face enraged her even more. Thalia kept circling toward the Ogres left, clawing and dodging as the melee went on. She ducked under a blow aimed at crushing her skull and leapt forward sinking her claws deep in to the thigh of her enemy slashing as she ripped her paws free. The Ogre dropped to his knee as Thalia gathered her feet behind him. She wasted no time and seized the moment of advantage wrapping her paws around the Ogre’s thick throat and tearing in opposite directions with her claws. As the Ogre fell before her, Thalia looked up to see the man reunited with the woman who had lost Thalia her dinner.
Her swamp was no longer the secluded home of the nomadic barbarian Tabaxi; but was being transformed in to a refuge from a great and growing evil. Where this evil had sprung from, and why it had found her? Thalia did not know, how exciting finding the answers would be. Thalia tracked down the men she had seen earlier and again heard them yelling, “we’re pulling up anchor in five minutes, anyone not aboard will be called a traitor and an enemy of the Highlord!” Thalia knew she had to find out who these men were working for and why they had come to Taladas. As the last of the men scrambled to load the barrels and crates on to the ship Thalia snuck in to one of the remaining crates and was unknowingly loaded aboard the vessel. “Set a course for Haligoth!” the captain shouted and with that order the ship lurched as the sails caught the wind leaving the Great Reed Delta, the whole continent of Taladas, and her home behind. Thalia Bloodfang lamented the adventures left unexplored on her home land, but was excited by the great unknown world she was heading in to. She wondered if she had ventured too far from comfort, but quickly dismissed the idea, curiosity guided her steps and what’s the worse a little curiosity could do?
