What is a Windmill?
A windmill is a device that allows for the conversion of environmental wind into a source of clean power for easy use. They are made of a strong base, used to hold the propeller, and the propeller which uses the wind to spin to generate electricity through the conversion of mechanical energy.
Part 1- design
The first step to creatine the windmill was to make a model out of plastic rods and paper. Using easy to find materials allowed for us to refine the design, by changing different aspects of the windmill, like amount of blades, size and shape of the blades, and the angle of the blades. When a design was settled on, we began replicating it out of wood.
Part 2- Construction
The second major part of creating the Windmill was using balsa wood to create a working model. Along with this, we finalized the details of our design. We decided to use 5 fan blades for maximum efficiency, and use the truss technique to make the base lightweight and stable. After all the pieces were assembled, we attached a motor on the back of it to truly test if it would generate power.
Part 3- Testing & Conclusion
The windmill was tested with a box fan, in order to produce a small amount of wind. The wind from the fan had to be small in order to truly test if the mill would produce power off a small amount of air. In the end, the windmill worked perfectly, generating enough power to light up an LED light, which was the end result.
