The Island of Shells

Introduction

In 1967, an 18-year-old young man, carrying the hopes of his entire family, left Malaysia to study in Taiwan. He dreamed of returning home with a degree to help support his family and give back to his community. However, not long after his arrival, he was falsely accused by secret agents and imprisoned on a remote island. It would be years before he could see his mother again, during a brief meeting in the prison visiting room.

This work is adapted from the true story of Chen Chin-sheng, a political victim during Taiwan's White Terror period. Presented in the form of shadow puppetry, it tells an allegorical tale. The audience controls a long-forgotten boy puppet who, encouraged by a bluebird, steps into a mysterious forest full of hope, collecting glowing feathers. But the forest proves far more dangerous than expected—and the true identity of the bluebird that lured him in begins to reveal itself.
