About Course:
Course Code: MEC 257
Course Name: MECHANICS OF SOLIDS
Credit Hour: 4
P. MEC 231. Concept of stress, strain, mechanical properties of materials, stress, strain due to tension, compression, shear and temperature change; shear force and bending moment, shear center, flexural and shear stress in beams; thin walled pressure vessel, riveted and welded joints, helical spring, torsional stress, combined stress, principal stress. Deflection of beams by area moment, integration, elastic load, conjugate beam method. Buckling of columns, Euler column load.
Course Outcomes (COs):
To compute and explain the effects of stress-strain under static axial loading and/or thermal effects on mechanical structures or components
To calculate and analyze the shearing stresses and strains on circular torsion members subjected to twisting couples
To analyze the behavior of beam & column under loadings and also compute the behavior of riveted, bolted and welded connections
To locate and compute the combined loading in a mechanical system
Targeted Program Outcomes (POs): PO1, PO2
