ICARUS
How striking it is to see it again,
this unusual show,
of your friends, failing to understand
you, changed some time ago.
Your image in their minds is still fresh;
they have known you from head to foot.
But now just grab the knife and slash
the ropes, discarding your parachute!
A new motor is roaring, silent to them,
and the spread of the wings, unseen from the Earth,
is bringing you into a new realm
above the roads of most.
So let their voices' familiar chorus
call you from afar as of old –
you don't feel your weight anymore,
indistinguishable in the fire of gold.

SAN DIEGO
At the edge of the ocean in the last time zone
amid rotten mountains and dried-up forests –
civilization is the last flower of this gone
land, sucking up the rest from its pores.
In the fiberglass, entangled bytes
at the speed of light don't know where to go.
Straighten out the meander of lefts and rights
by sections of eternity in a row!
On the network you hear a quiet moaning:
Google is digesting Qualcomm.
In a mortal embrace in the silicon
they're dinosaurs of the times coming.

COLUMBUS DAY
Living close to Columbus Avenue
south of Columbia University
not far from the corner of Central Park,
where the statue of the slave trader stands,
celebrating that black day,
when five hundred years ago in October
the dove of death with his comrades
for the first time descended onto the soil of the
Western Hemisphere –
I am thinking about what was probably
the first in history,
the biggest, and the most successful genocide
that spread Western civilization
by a factor of two
and provided me
with greater freedom of maneuver
and better professional prospects
at the expense of destroying civilizations
of peaceful and nature-bound peoples,
some of which haven't left a gene behind.
Thinking about
why the all-seeing Christian God
did not stop his envoys with cross and armor
by sinking their ships in a storm,
I am looking through the thick of alien people,
just like myself,
who have filled the void,
and the boxes of concrete and glass
appear to me as parts
of a giant columbarium.

IN FREE FLIGHT
That night on the plane, as usual,
I was struck by a burst of inspiration.
Rhythms were pulsating in my head,
becoming verse meters.
Words interlocked with their facets
forming something new and mysterious,
sparkling with new colors.
Love poetry was followed by surrealism,
surrealism turned into absurdism,
absurdism became zaum,
and zaum gave way to philosophical lyric.
I could hardly keep up writing all this down
drumming on my iPad with my unskilled fingers.
Petals of rhymes fell off,
baring turgid berries of meaning.
Iambs and trochees disappeared
yielding to free verse.
Lines were cracking with an abundance of ideas,
rare in lyric poetry.
The spoken word died away,
pushed aside by ratiocinations
culminating in succinct formulas
at the very core of our being.
My victorious endeavors were supported by my spouse,
sitting in the next seat,
from whom, as from a muse,
streams of creative energy were flowing towards me.
I was reading each masterpiece aloud to her,
and she was nodding approvingly
in noise-canceling earphones.
