As a School Counselor in Training (SCIT), I feel genuinely excited and motivated to actively participate in all avenues of school counseling. This experience has been incredibly rewarding, and working at my site has given me valuable knowledge and hands-on practice that I can apply across different age groups. What stands out the most is the joy that comes from building meaningful relationships with students. Watching them grow more comfortable and open with me throughout the year reminds me why I chose this field and reinforces the importance of the connections we build (Green & Lloyd, 2021).
To continuously grow and improve as a school counselor, I’ve learned that asking questions and seeking feedback is essential. I also regularly visit the ASCA website to find webinars and other learning opportunities that can help me develop my skills. One recent webinar I attended focused on play therapy and parenting, and it offered helpful tools for advocating for parents and providing them with resources they can use at home. These types of professional development experiences are shaping me into a more effective counselor and helping me understand the many ways I can support students and their families (Green & Lloyd, 2021).
