Through reflective practice and feedback, as well as self-assessment tools; I can develop a deeper understanding of how to outline and evaluate a flowing school counselor program.
My site supervisor gave feedback that was both encouraging and constructive. She discussed my strengths while giving clear areas for improvement. According to my supervisor, I have demonstrated “exceptional professionalism” and a strong ability to build relationships with students, staff, and families. These affirmations boosted my confidence in my interpersonal and organizational skills, reinforcing my belief in my capacity to make a positive impact. However, my personal note is my need for further development in areas such as conducting assessments and building confidence in high-stakes interactions like risk assessments. This can be achieved by participating in professional development that is geared towards risk assessment protocols. Asking my site supervisor to role play with me to build my confidence in this situation and lastly practice with improving my SOLER by maintaining supportive facial expressions during sessions and practicing with my site supervisor.
With the use of the various tools such as school counselor performance appraisal and school counselor standards and competencies checklist, I can identify strengths in relationship-building, adaptability and equity in cultural, social and environmental influences. However, I recognize a need for improvement in leadership, as well as advocacy with stakeholders. With my ongoing participation in my internship the goal is to receive continuous practice and feedback to make the needed progress in these areas to continue to grow as a SCIT.
A big part of the Manage component is to make sure that all students’ needs are being meet. I have made some progress in this area by working with my site supervisor, teachers, and assistant principals while reviewing attendance, academic performance, and behavior. The data we collect allows us to take note of how attendance affects academic performance and behaviors across all students.
With my continuous growth in the Manage component, I have grown in my ability to balance constructive feedback with the use of self-assessment and self-improvement planning. I am confident in my ability to implement data-driven strategies, engage in meaningful assessments, and continuously evaluate program effectiveness. While I recognize the ongoing need to polish my counseling techniques and build confidence in high-pressure situations, I am committed to this growth process and look forward to continuing my development as a school counselor.
