As a SCIT, I demonstrate genuine care in my relationships with students by using the SOLER approach by sitting facing them, keeping an open posture, leaning in, maintaining eye contact, and staying relaxed; whenever I interact with them. I make it a point to greet students each morning and ask about their weekends or past conversations, which helps show that I truly care. I’ve even worn something that connects to a previous discussion just to spark further conversation and show them I was really listening. When students sense that I genuinely care, they tend to open up more and trust me with their thoughts and feelings.
I also provide support across social, emotional, and academic areas. Socially, I stay present and available, making sure students know I’m someone they can talk to. I maintain regular communication to build strong, positive relationships. Emotionally, I listen closely and check in with students who need extra care and attention. Academically, I support them by creating sessions on skills like time management and organization. I also help them get into classes that offer extra support in reading or math, as well as reaching out to teachers to explore tutoring opportunities. These instances showcase my support for the students overall well-being.
