Throughout my practicum experience, I have developed a profound understanding of the ASCA National Model's Deliver component, particularly in applying direct and indirect student services that align with ASCA Student Standards. By incorporating feedback from my instructors and reflecting on my own experiences, I have enhanced my ability to identify and apply these standards to improve student outcomes.
One key area of growth has been identifying ASCA Student Standards to address student needs in both group and individual settings. In our small group sessions, we utilized standards B-LS 1 (critical thinking skills to make informed decisions), BSMS 1 (responsibility for self and actions), and BSS 1 (effective oral and written communication skills and listening skills). These standards guided our approach in encouraging self-advocacy and communication among students. While facilitating group discussions, I encouraged students to develop personal action plans and advocate for themselves, in addition to engaging in indirect services by collaborating with teachers. This collaboration focused on ensuring that students had additional access to materials, supporting their ability to complete and submit assignments successfully. The incorporation of these standards helped bridge gaps in academic performance and student engagement.
Additionally, my ability to utilize evidence-based counseling strategies and techniques for prevention and intervention has significantly improved. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been particularly beneficial for students in small group settings, as they have been receptive and open to communication. I have successfully applied CBT principles to Attendance Intervention Plans (AIP), academic planning, and behavioral progress monitoring. With the use of structured meetings, students set personal goals and monitor their progress weekly, with my guidance. For behavioral concerns, students engaged in discussions on self-regulation and coping strategies, allowing them to discover practical ways to manage their emotions and behaviors. This structured approach not only empowered students to take ownership of their progress but also reinforced the importance of goal setting and self-reflection.
Another area of professional growth has been my engagement in strategies for personal and professional self-evaluation and implications for practice (2.F.1.k). Throughout this process, I have consistently reflected on my counseling techniques and requested feedback from my site supervisor and instructors. One significant realization, has been the importance of creating interventions that are tailored to meet the unique needs of each student rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach. Furthermore, I have become more purposeful in tracking student progress and adjusting intervention strategies as needed. I have also improved in analyzing student data, monitoring grades, and assisting in determining which students require additional academic support. Moreover, I have become more comfortable interacting with teachers, administration, and students to facilitate collaboration and student support. However, I recognize that I need more practice and skill development in handling risk assessments effectively. With that in mind, I need to enhance my communication with parents and strengthen collaborations with the community to provide a more comprehensive support system for students.
Overall, my development within the Deliver component of the ASCA National Model has been progressive. I have gained confidence in selecting and applying ASCA Student Standards, implementing evidence-based interventions like CBT, and engaging in reflective self-evaluation. These experiences have strengthened my capability in delivering thorough school counseling services that address both academic and behavioral student needs while fostering advocacy and resilience.
