In the Luxembourg history journal Hémecht under the heading "Aus alten Schriften" a census of the City of Luxembourg drawn up in 1732, the original of which is now kept in the Archives of Her Majesty the Queen of the Netherlands in The Hague is transcribed. The document is part of the Bentinck Collection (ref. G 2 Nr. 69 I A) which was acquired by King Grand Duke William I in 1829.

La Ville de Luxembourg en l'an 1732
The census in question consists of three different registers, namely a) List of the Burghers and Inhabitants of the City of Luxembourg who, in execution of the ordinance of January 28th last published and posted on the same day, provided in writing the following declarations, begun on February 3rd and completed on the 11th, 1732; b) List of the Burghers and Inhabitants residing in the Lower Town known as Le Gronde, begun on February 12th, 1732; and c) List of the Burghers and Inhabitants residing in the Lower Town, known as Paffendall. The survey, comprising 139 handwritten pages with approximately 1,000 houses, was completed and drawn up in triplicate in Luxembourg on February 11th, 1732. But only one copy—signed by Justiciar C.W. Kellner—is known at this time This census had been ordered by a commission set up to complete the information about the conspiracy discovered in the city of Luxembourg in the autumn of 1730.
The last known census before this one was established in January 1688 and Father François Lascombes published it in volume IC of the Publications of the Historical Section of the Grand Ducal Institute in 1984 under the title "The City of Luxembourg during the second half of the 17th century. Dwellings and inhabitants". The first census of the city after 1732, if we ignore the Marie-Thérèse land register of 1766, is that of "Military housing during the period from 1794 to 1814" and published by Alphonse Rupprecht in the history journal Ons Hémecht from 1917 to 1928.
The households (for the upper town) are transcribed, probably from isolated cards, in complete disorder. It was therefore first necessary to group all the inscriptions by street names. The house numbers are not given. Consequently, the sequence of inscriptions given hardly matches the sequence of houses in the respective streets. The designation of the streets corresponds to a broader concept than that of today; it concerns more neighborhoods than streets in the strict current sense. For the lower towns (Pfaffenthal and Grund), there is no indication of streets
This census, however, provides us with a wealth of interesting information for the history of the city of Luxembourg at this time. It indicates, for example, the profession, place of birth, number of children, where applicable, the number of workers employed, and the origin of domestic staff. Genealogists will therefore find useful details or additions for their research. It is regrettable that only the number, and not the names, of the "schoolchildren" is given. These were students who were housed in private homes and who attended the Jesuit College in Luxembourg
