Lumumba Dag 2026

Vandaag staan we hier stil bij de moord op Patrice Lumumba, 65 jaar geleden, op 17 januari 1961.

We herdenken niet alleen een tragisch verlies. We vieren ook de droom die hij ons naliet: een droom van vrijheid, rechtvaardigheid en waardigheid voor het Congolese volk.

Zoals Sibo Rugwiza Kanobana recent schrijft in Lumumba’s Droom, was Lumumba niet slechts een charismatische leider, maar ook een visionair. Hij zag de onafhankelijkheid van Congo niet als een eindpunt, maar als het begin van een samenleving waarin elke burger telt, waarin rechtvaardigheid en menselijke waardigheid centraal staan, en waarin uitbuiting en ongelijkheid geen plaats meer hebben.

Zijn strijd was niet alleen nationaal; het confronteerde machtige externe krachten die zijn visie en Congo zelf bedreigden. Zijn strijd was tragisch, maar ook inspirerend. Vandaag nodigt het ons uit om zijn droom concreet vorm te geven.

Herdenken is geen ritueel. Het is een actieve oefening, een betekenisvolle daad. Het is een moment om terug te kijken, maar vooral om vooruit te zien:

• Welke lessen dragen wij mee uit het verleden?

• Welke uitdagingen vragen onze aandacht vandaag?

• Hoe maken wij Lumumba’s droom levend in ons dagelijks handelen?

Vrijheid is meer dan een juridische status. Het is een blijvend engagement voor menselijkheid en rechtvaardigheid.

Patrice Lumumba’s droom leeft voort, in ons engagement, in onze inzet voor een wereld die eerlijker, rechtvaardiger en menselijker is.

Laten we die droom alle eer aan doen.

Aujourd’hui, nous nous recueillons pour commémorer l’assassinat de Patrice Lumumba, il y a 65 ans, le 17 janvier 1961.

Nous ne commémorons pas seulement une perte tragique. Nous célébrons aussi le rêve qu’il nous a laissé : un rêve de liberté, de justice et de dignité pour le peuple congolais.

Comme l’écrit récemment Sibo Rugwiza Kanobana dans Le Rêve de Lumumba, Lumumba n’était pas seulement un leader charismatique, mais aussi un visionnaire. Il considérait l’indépendance du Congo non comme un point final, mais comme le début d’une société où chaque citoyen compte, où la justice et la dignité humaine sont centrales, et où l’exploitation et l’inégalité n’ont pas leur place.

Sa lutte ne se limitait pas au niveau national ; elle affrontait des puissances extérieures qui menaçaient sa vision et le Congo lui-même. Sa lutte fut tragique, mais aussi inspirante. Aujourd’hui, elle nous invite à concrétiser son rêve.

Commémorer n’est pas seulement un rituel. C’est un exercice actif, un acte significatif. C’est un moment pour regarder en arrière, mais surtout pour regarder vers l’avenir :

• Quelles leçons devons-nous retenir du passé ?

• Quels défis exigent notre attention aujourd’hui ?

• Comment garder le rêve de Lumumba vivant dans nos actes quotidiens ?

La liberté est plus qu’un statut légal. C’est un engagement constant pour l’humanité et la justice.

Le rêve de Patrice Lumumba vit toujours, dans notre engagement, dans nos efforts pour un monde plus juste, plus équitable et plus humain.

Rendons hommage à ce rêve.

Today we gather to remember the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, 65 years ago, on January 17, 1961.

We are not only commemorating a tragic loss. We are celebrating the dream he left us: a dream of freedom, justice, and dignity for the Congolese people.

As Sibo Rugwiza Kanobana recently writes in Lumumba’s Dream, Lumumba was not only a charismatic leader, but also a visionary. He saw Congo’s independence not as an endpoint, but as the beginning of a society in which every citizen counts, where justice and human dignity are central, and where exploitation and inequality have no place.

His struggle was not merely national; it confronted powerful external forces that threatened his vision and Congo itself. His struggle was tragic, but also inspiring. Today, it invites us to make his dream a reality.

Commemoration is not merely a ritual. It is an active exercise, a meaningful act. It is a moment to look back, but above all, to look forward:

• What lessons must we carry forward from the past?

• Which challenges demand our attention today?

• How do we keep Lumumba’s dream alive in our daily actions?

Freedom is more than a legal status. It is a continuous commitment to humanity and justice.

Patrice Lumumba’s dream lives on, in our engagement, in our efforts for a fairer, more just, and more humane world.

Let us honor that dream.

Voorleessessie: ‘Congo – Boeken die geschiedenis schreven’

Van 15:00 tot 16:00 uur kan je luisteren naar krachtige fragmenten uit boeken die blijven schuren, inspireren en confronteren. Het zijn teksten die iets in beweging hebben gezet. De bibliotheek is de ideale plek om stil te staan bij deze verhalen en opnieuw te kijken naar onze gedeelde Belgisch-Congolese relatie.

Herdenkingsmoment: ‘Lumumba’s droom’

Na de voorleessessie volgt om 16:00 uur een kort herdenkingsmoment in het stadspark, bij de twee koloniale beelden. We staan stil bij wat het gedachtengoed van Patrice Lumumba ons vandaag nog kan leren. Lumumba werd op 17 januari 1961 vermoord.

Moment de commémoration :
« Le rêve de Lumumba »

Après la séance de lecture, à 16h00, un court moment de commémoration aura lieu dans le parc de la ville, près des deux statues coloniales. Nous prendrons le temps de réfléchir à ce que la pensée de Patrice Lumumba peut encore nous apprendre aujourd’hui. Lumumba a été assassiné le 17 janvier 1961.

These are texts that have sparked change. The library is the ideal place to reflect on these stories and to revisit our shared Belgian–Congolese relationship.

Commemoration moment: “Lumumba’s Dream”

Following the reading session, at 4:00 PM, a short commemoration will take place in the city park, near the two colonial statues. We will pause to reflect on what Patrice Lumumba’s ideas can still teach us today. Lumumba was assassinated on January 17, 1961.
