The following active learning protocols are intended to provide task-oriented, engaging, and meaningful application strategies in implementing restorative justice and positive behavioral intervention strategies within a school environment and culture. These active learning protocols, including both small and large group discussion, last between 15-20 and 30-40 minutes and are supplemental and complementary to the Restorative Justice PD plan provided in another module.

Restorative practices within schools are based on the restorative justice principles instead of the typical punitive approach. The approach is to first create a classroom community that is supported by agreements, communication and specific tools that are meant to bring concerns or conflicts forward in a helpful manner. Restorative practices are designed to give specific pathways to repair harms done by bringing together those who were impacted by the misbehavior and create a dialogue to address these concerns, achieve an understanding and come to an agreement about setting things right.

Data-analysis should be woven throughout every practice and system across all tiers. Schools that use data to make decisions about practices being implemented throughout schools are more effective and efficient in solving problems of practice and creating a positive school climate.
