There is also a full minute-by-minute pacing of the PD at the bottom of this page for a truly in-depth look.
I will learn concepts behind cultural sensitivity and relevance in my practices and curriculum. (To maximize learning opportunities, teachers gain knowledge of the cultures represented in their classrooms and translate this knowledge into instructional practice.)
2. I will consider how my curriculum can be amended/extended/or revised to be relevant to all stakeholders. (A reshaped curriculum is culturally responsive to the background of students.)
3. I will learn to create an atmosphere in my classroom and school where all students feel welcome, respected, and capable of success. (Teachers should work to develop consistent messages, from both the teacher and the whole school, that students will succeed, based upon genuine respect for students and belief in student capability.)
A Gapminder online quiz to help teachers assess their own personal biases.
Teachers will watch an excerpt of Ran Hosling's work on culturally relevant instruction.
Assess your curriculum when it comes to Cultural Relevance and Responsivity.
3-5 Min: Welcome - Meet and Greet participants
5-8 min: Go over PD Learning targets and purpose for this PD
2-4 min: Introduction of Presenter Jennifer Kennedy
2-4 min: Introduction of Presenter Vanessa Baker
2-4 min: Introduction of Presenter Tamaira McClure
8-12 min: Have participants complete the Gapminder quiz
2-3 min: Discuss scores out loud with groups - allow participants to share out results.
5-7 min: Have participants watch the video that is part of the project
3-5 min: Have participants discuss in small group their thoughts (if in person), they may compare themselves to the outcome they should have gotten.
6 min: Watch "What is Culturally Relevant Curriculum?" video
3 min: Discussing at tables (in Breakout groups if on Zoom) your thoughts
8-10 min: Now that you have watched the video, please take the next 8 minutes to reflect on your own practices and Cultural Relevance and Responsivity in your classroom, lessons, and curriculum.
5-8 min: Next share out to table then to whole group areas that you want to focus on going forward.
3-5 min: Go over the Student Interview Protocol - Discuss with group the importance of choosing the right questions for the students. Choose only 2-3 at a time, not all of them - really think about what you want to focus on and know.
8-10 min: Overview the actual questions - high school vs elementary friendly
5-8 min: Have teachers pick 3-5 they feel they could use best and share out to small group.
1 min: Take a look at this picture: Diversity in Children's Books
8 min: (4 - 2 min increments); Mix, Pair Share Activity
3-5 min: Small Group Thoughts and Sharing
3-5 min: Share out with group a book that you have read
2-3 minutes: Classroom Library Questionnaire - Click the questionnaire to give participants a preview of what kinds of questions they contain. Provide links/hard copies for participants to use to evaluate their resources later. Teachers should pick one to fill out and be ready to discuss at a later PLC meeting.
3-5 min: "Getting Deeper," recall the iceberg...there is always more beneath the surface than what you see. Converse on times when teachers have found this out in their curriculum
2 min: Turn & Talk - what does the quote in bold mean to you? How does it make you feel?
2-4 min to fill out Padlet and 2-4 min to discuss/call on people to share answers: Facilitator should remark on items as they come up and make observations. Is it because it is a subject the teachers is very interested in? Is it because the students get excited? How can we make more days in class like the days we teach our favorite lessons? How do we get more buy-in from students?
1-2 min: Think about your favorite Teacher growing up
1-2 min: Why were they your favorite?
2-3 min: In the Padlet, write out your response
5-8 min: Discuss those attributes as a small group/large group
5-7 min: Facilitator will ask teachers to share what sorts of things do they do to get to know their students. Give them the link to What the Kids Be Saying on Instagram. High school math teacher Ms. Brunat explains teen slang and trends. What other resources do you know about? How do you keep up on trends?
3-6 min: How can we make sure we are letting kids “catch” the spirit of learning? Strategies like cooperative learning activities would let that student express his ideas with a partner or small group. Setting norms together might mean you decide as a class that you won’t talk over one another or we take turns. Let participants discuss in groups for 3-6 minutes.
3-4 min: Consider the units that you teach now. Are their real word connections in them? Do students have an opportunity to address issues within their communities? How are we empowering our students?
3-5 min: Now that you’ve thought about getting to know and understand your students better, how you might change the classroom procedures to better suit their needs - What about the content you are teaching? Since this is more personal, have participants jot down notes/answers to the questions
2-3 min: To show the Social Justice standards and discuss
2-3 min: letting participants share other resources related to these standards
2-3 min: Facilitator goes over additional resources. We recommend that participants continue studying, reflecting, and practicing being culturally relevant in their classrooms by reading, implementing, and discussing in PLCs.
5-7 min: This is a journey not a destination. We will be asking you to use some of the resources mentioned today (the classroom library questionnaire for example) on your own and to meet and discuss with your colleagues, hopefully during a future PLC meeting. Please also fill out the Feedback form linked or scan the QR code. Give participants 5 min to complete.
