The sky was painted with warm autumn colors as Malik sat on the stone wall outside his home in the hills of Morocco. Olive trees swayed in the breeze. He was tossing pebbles when he heard a voice.
“Have you seen my horse?”
It was Elena, the Spanish girl who had moved into the village a month ago. Her curls bounced as she ran up.
“He’s called Rayo,” she said. “He ran off into the hills.”
“I’ll help you look,” Malik offered.
“Gracias!” she smiled.
As they started up the trail, two other children approached from the nearby guesthouse — Hana, visiting from Japan, and Liam, from Australia.
“Did you say a horse ran away?” Liam asked.
**“Can we come?” Hana added softly. “I’m good at spotting tracks.”
Elena hesitated, but Malik nodded.
“We’ll find him faster together.”
---
The four children hiked up the narrow path. The air smelled of dry earth and rosemary.
“Look!” Hana pointed. “Hoofprints.”
“They go toward the ravine,” Malik said.
As they neared the trees, they heard a panicked neigh. Rayo was stuck among thorny vines near a rocky drop.
“¡Rayo!” Elena cried.
“Don’t run — he’s scared,” Hana said gently.
“We need to calm him,” said Malik, picking rosemary. “Elena, talk to him.”
“Rayo... tranquilo... I’m here,” she whispered.
The horse stilled.
“I’ve got an idea,” Liam said. “Let’s make a little path out of sticks and leaves — a soft way out.”
“Brilliant!” Malik grinned.
Working together, they cleared branches, laid a path, and freed Rayo.
---
As they led him home, the children chatted and laughed.
“I didn’t expect to go on a horse rescue today,” Liam said.
“Or meet new friends,” added Hana.
“Team Rayo!” Elena shouted.
“Let’s do it again,” Malik smiled. “But maybe without the thorns.”
They all laughed as the sun dipped low, painting the hills in gold.
—¿Has visto mi caballo?
—Te ayudaré a buscarlo —ofreció Malik.
—¡Gracias!
—¡Miren!
—¡Equipo Rayo!
