1989

1989 brought a new roof line for sedan models, removal of vinyl tops from the sedan option list (they have been removed from coupes as part of the mid-86 refresh), introduction of the 3300 Buick V6, which replaced the previous Buick 3.8 liter V6, new rear styling, and the removal of the "Brougham" nameplate. As such, hood ornaments and wind splits were gone from the Ciera line.

All models received revised grilles (vertical bars) and rounded rear styling that moved the license plate pocket up from the rear bumper to the center of the tail panel, large tail lamps, and new sheet metal. Sedans now had a small Oldsmobile crest on the C pillar.

The new 3300 V6, which was essentially a smaller bore 3800, featured 160 hp and 185 lbs/tq.

New body side moldings were wider and flatter than before, interior switches were now graphite rather than chrome, new interior fabrics, and a renaming of the Cruiser Brougham as the Cruiser SL were done this year.

Rounding out changes for 1989 was the addition of an XC option for the Cruiser Wagon.
