I watched this movie with my family, which was not the best decision. Initially, I withheld what I knew about the movie from my parents while we watched it, and once we had stopped it with about 20 minutes left, my mother was left reeling. She thought it was just going to be a movie about hypnosis, and she is not an action/thriller/suspense/horror kind of cinema fan. She loves romantic comedies, foreign movies, and the works. My mistake was not warning her how truly disturbing this movie would be.
Although she did not end up enjoying the movie, I found it to be very well done. It's completely different from anything I have ever seen and Jordan Peele deserved every award and nomination he received from this movie. To boot, Daniel Kaluuya's performance was incredible and I think really made the movie. Yet in addition to this, the smaller details also made the movie come together like one of those 1000-word puzzles that are so satisfying to finish. One of my favorites was the way Rod literally foreshadowed everything that was happening at the Armitage Estate and everything that would end up happening to Chris. In fact, Rod was my favorite character, with Chris being a close second.
One interesting connection I have to the movie is that an alum from my high school came to speak about a program he took part in at the high school, and he has Allison William's phone number. Williams played the manipulative Rose Armitage in the movie and did a scaringly amazing job with it. Her acting skills really shined in the film, especially at the end during the scene where she speaks to Rob over the phone.
Take it from me—I'm not a horror fan. I have to plug my ears and rock back and forth whenever I watch a horror film, the latest piece I watched being The Exorcist: Believer. I much prefer to watch horror in broad daylight surrounded by people rather than in a dark theatre where the jumpscares turn the whole room a different color. Get Out is a different type of horror; it didn't cause my plug & rock but it did make me feel ill at ease as the plot unfolded and claws came out. I rate this movie a 9.5/10, the 0.5 missing because of some issues I had with the pacing. I highly recommend this movie for fans of any genre.
