are my prescriptions and other medical services covered under my health plan?
Outside of accessing a family doctor (which is part of The Ontario Health Insurance Plan - OHIP - or UHIP, for international students), you have coverage under your graduate student plan to access dental services, vision services, and to see certain other health care professions. If you are an OISE graduate student who pays all of your student fees, you are guaranteed a health care plan with Green Shield Canada.
Greenshield Canada (GSC) is the University of Toronto Graduate Students’ Union’s (UTGSU) preferred provider for Graduate Health and Dental Plans.
The Health & Dental Plan is a service provided by your graduate students’ union to fill the gaps in provincial health care. Both domestic and international students are automatically covered, but certain exceptions exist, so you should check your student account to make sure you have paid the required fees. If you have paid your student fees, you are automatically given a Green Shield Health plan (that includes some health, dental and vision services) unless you decide to opt out.
Opting out means you would get back money you paid as part of student fees for the health care package. You might want to opt out if you have an existing health care plan. You can read more about opting in and out here.
Each OISE graduate student has a Green Shield Canada University of Toronto Graduate Student Union (UTSGU) health care plan, which includes:
80% of your eligible prescription drug costs, up to $5,000 per policy year

TOP-UPS
If you’re a Graduate Assistant (GA) at OISE, you and your dependents enjoy additional health care benefits. The GA union at OISE, Cupe 3907, refers to this as the Top-up Plan. The employer (UofT) contributes directly to this plan’s coverage.
CUPE3907 offers two plans to its members:
Plan A:
Plan A includes a Top-Up Plan in addition to the HealthCare Spending Account (HCSA), if you’re enrolled in the UTGSA Plan.
Plan B:
Plan B is for students who have opted out of the “UTGSA”s Plan.
All the information about CUPE 3907 and their benefits may be found on their website here:
