getting a course instructor position
getting a course instructor position
what is a course instructor (CI) position?
Course Instructorships are positions that allow students to teach courses: prepare course materials, lectures, and evaluate students. a
how do you apply for a CI?
You can apply for OISE-arranged and non-OISE-arranged TA positions.
If you’re a full-time student and get an OISE-arranged CI in the Fall/Winter sessions while you are funded, it’ll become a component in the Graduate Funding Package that you’ll be receiving for the academic year.
Because the number of OISE-arranged “CI”s is limited, you’ll likely need to apply for “CI”s elsewhere at the university (St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough campus).
APPLYING FOR OISE CIs
How to Apply for an OISE-arranged CI
You may not be alerted to the possibility of submitting an application for a Course Instructorship.
OISE-arranged Course Instructorship: Application Timelines
To make sure you don’t miss any opportunities, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the current schedule for the application process. You can find the tentative application schedule for positions to be held in the Fall/Winter and Summer sessions here, under Course Instructorship:
APPLYING FOR NON-OISE CIs
How to Apply for a non-OISE-arranged CI
Typically, you won’t be alerted to the possibility of submitting an application for a Course Instructorship outside of OISE.
You can find all currently advertised “CI”s at the three campuses here:
This centralized website is useful, but requires you to know either the right key words or course codes for your search to be fruitful.
You might like to identify specific departments where you’re best suited to apply for TA positions and locate the website section of these departments where available TA positions are regularly posted.
Non-OISE-arranged CI: Application Timelines
There are no exact posting dates, but you can expect “CI”s to be advertised several weeks before each term begins (Fall, Winter, Summer).
Because each Faculty and Department at the university might have a slightly different timeline for posting available positions, you might like to:
Identify the specific departments where you’re best suited to apply for “CI”s,
Locate the website of each department and the section where they post available “CI”s,
Bookmark them,
Check that page regularly
OTHER CI TIPS
When applying for CI positions, you might like to ask yourself the following questions and take into account the following considerations:
Does the CI position broadly align with the area of my expertise as a scholar in the future?
Have I held this CI position before?
Should I apply to a variety of CI positions (so that I will have been a TA in a variety of courses)?
Considerations:
Because of the distance from the central, St. George campus, it might be easier to get a CI position at the Mississauga or Scarborough campus.
If you are looking for TA and CI positions offered at universities other than the University of Toronto, make sure you look under listings of positions that do not require you to be a registered student or post-doctoral fellow at the institution.
