base funding explained
what is base funding?
If you are a full-time PhD student (not flex-time, which usually indicates you are a working professional as you complete your degree), you will receive an OISE base-funding package.
There are four types of funding packages:
Funding consists of the major scholarship and may include an OISE Fellowship
Large scholarships (worth at least 40% of the funding level) will be included in the value of the OISE Funding Package.
For example, if the domestic funding level is set at $25,000, a student holding a scholarship valued at $10,000 or more falls under this category.
A student who holds a scholarship valued at less than $12,000 may be eligible for a Graduate Assistantship (GA).
For more information please see Applying for External Scholarships.
Funding consists of a Graduate Assistantship (GA), a Research Fellowship (RF) and an OISE Fellowship.
GA/RF students are chosen by OISE faculty members to undertake research activities.
The GA placement occurs in the Fall (September 1 to December 31) and consists of 120 hours.
The RF placement occurs in the Winter (January 1 to April 30).
For more information, please see Student Employment Opportunities.
Funding consists of employment as a Graduate Assistant (GA) or Research and Development GA (R&D GA) and an OISE Fellowship.
Graduate Assistants are hired to undertake research or field work under the supervision of a Faculty Member.
GA and R&D GA placements occur September 1 to April 30 and consist of 240 hours.
For more information, please see Student Employment Opportunities.
Funding consists of a Course Instructorship (CI) or Teaching Assistantship (TA) and an OISE Fellowship.
Course Instructors are hired to lead teaching and course activities.
Teaching Assistants are hired to assist in teaching and course activities.
CI or TA placements vary in hours and can occur in the Fall (September 1 to December 31); Winter (January 1 to April 30); or Fall/Winter (September 1 to April 30).
Depending on the number of hours assigned, a student may also be eligible for a Graduate Assistantship (e.g., Fall TA for 120 hours and Winter GA for 120 hours.)

how does base funding connect with Graduate Assistantship job groups?
At OISE, there are two main job groups for Graduate Assistantships: Group A & Group B.
If you are still within the window of your base funding, you are considered to be part of Group A and can apply for Group A jobs.
After that, you become part of Group B and can access different funds and apply for Group B jobs.
You will often be sent notification emails about job opportunities that pertain to you.
