getting a work study position
what is a work study?
The Work Study Program at UofT offers paid, on-campus positions twice a year (fall-winter and summer) that provide you with an opportunity to deepen your knowledge, strengthen your skills and explore how your academic interests translate to career possibilities. All Work Study positions are CCR recognized (see the CCR website to learn more). All Work Study students are expected to set learning goals for their experience to help ensure you are intentional about what knowledge and skills you want to strengthen and develop in your role.
Hours and Rate of Pay
Work Study positions pay a minimum of $15 an hour as of fall 2019 and generally require about 10 hours of work per week (15 hours a week maximum), to a maximum of 200 hours for the fall/winter program and 100 hours in the summer program. Please note, the Work Study Program is a program approved by the University of Toronto that is exempt from the Employment Standards Act, 2000 (ESA); therefore, the 4% vacation pay is not paid on top of the wage.

MADDY (SJE PhD Candidate)
I love the work-study program. I participated in the work-study program during my undergrad as well, which allowed me to make various connections and gain great experience! In May 2020, I applied for a new work-study position within U of T's Academic Success Department (a division of Student Life). I started working as a peer mentor, meeting one-on-one with students to support them in their academic journeys, and in the fall I became a Senior Peer Mentor on the team. I love this work as it has helped me to develop a new interest and passion in student life and mentorship!
