Subject: Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)
Duration: 60 minutes
Lesson Title: Understanding Mental Health Concepts Through Kahoot
Objective:
Students will demonstrate their understanding of mental health concepts by participating in a Kahoot quiz, enhancing their knowledge of key terms and issues related to mental well-being.
Materials Needed:
Computers or tablets with internet access
Projector and screen for displaying the Kahoot quiz
Pre-prepared Kahoot quiz on mental health topics
Procedure:
Introduction (10 mins):
Introduce the topic of mental health, discussing its importance and relevance to students' lives. Explain the purpose of the Kahoot quiz as a fun way to assess their knowledge.
Direct Instruction (15 mins):
Review key mental health concepts, terms, and statistics that will be included in the Kahoot quiz. Engage students in a brief discussion about why understanding mental health is crucial.
Kahoot Quiz (25 mins):
Launch the Kahoot quiz. Students will participate individually or in small groups, answering questions in real-time. Encourage healthy competition by discussing the leaderboard and celebrating correct answers.
Reflection and Discussion (5 mins):
After the quiz, facilitate a class discussion about the questions they found challenging and the concepts they would like to explore further.
Closure (5 mins):
Summarise the key points discussed in the lesson and encourage students to seek more information about mental health through reputable resources.
Assessment:
Students will be assessed based on their participation in the Kahoot quiz, the accuracy of their answers, and their engagement in the follow-up discussion.
Rationale for Technology Choices
Using Kahoot in this PDHPE lesson is an effective way to foster engagement and reinforce learning through gamification. The interactive nature of Kahoot transforms assessment into a dynamic experience, encouraging participation and immediate feedback (O’Brien, 2017). As highlighted by Wilson et al. (2016), digital tools like Kahoot can significantly enhance teaching and assessment by providing a platform for meaningful engagement.
The real-time nature of Kahoot allows students to actively reflect on their understanding of mental health concepts, making learning more relevant and impactful. Timmis et al. (2016) emphasise the importance of incorporating technology into assessment practices, noting that it can reveal insights into student comprehension that traditional methods may overlook. This integration of Kahoot not only aids in knowledge retention but also promotes collaborative learning, aligning with contemporary educational practices that prioritise student-centred approaches. Ultimately, leveraging Kahoot enhances the educational experience, preparing students for informed discussions about mental health in their daily lives.
